Trans-Tasman Alliance

From Friday 8 July you will be able to purchase fares through Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia’s new alliance. The new code share services commence Tuesday 26 July for services across the Tasman and on connecting domestic services. Linking Air New Zealand’s network of 27 ports in New Zealand to Virgin Australia’s network of 29 ports in Australia, the alliance will create the largest ever Australasian route network resulting in improved connectivity and more convenient flight times across many routes.
Pacific Blue (DJ) operated services with Air New Zealand (NZ) codeshare are identified as NZ7000 series flights
Air New Zealand (NZ) operated services with Pacific Blue (DJ) codeshare are identified as DJ8000 series flights
Below is some information relating to the new alliance network to ensure the most seamless travel experience for customers.

Fares and Products:
If booking Air New Zealand operated services or NZ7000 series flights:
  • Seat, Seat + Bag and The Works products are available
  • Works Deluxe product is not available on NZ7000 series flights (operated by Pacific Blue)
  • Seat, Seat + Bag fares on NZ7000 series flights DO NOT include in-flight entertainment.
If booking Pacific Blue operated services or DJ8000 series flights:
  • Pacific Blue Saver and Flexi fare types are available.
  • Premium fares are not available on DJ8000 series flights (operated by Air New Zealand)
The below table can be used as a quick guide reference for what is included with both airlines products on Tasman services:

Sabre Online:
Below is an example screen shot from Sabre Online showing how a NZ7000 series flight number operated by Pacific Blue will display once selected.
Below is an example of how this flight segment will display on the Client Statement once booked. As this service is operated by Pacific Blue, the traveller is required to check-in at the Pacific Blue counters.

  • All passengers need to check-in with the operating carrier. E.g. NZ7051 to Sydney, check in at the Pacific Blue counter.

  • All airport information screens displaying flight information will display both the NZ and DJ flight number. The operating carrier will also be displayed.
  • Priority check-in counters will be available for eligible members when travelling on either carrier.
  • Kiosks are available domestically in New Zealand for passengers travelling on Air New Zealand operated flights only.
  • Kiosks are available in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin for passengers travelling to Australia on Air New Zealand operated flights only.
      Through-Check
    • Through-check is available when travelling continuously with the same carrier booked and ticketed in the same itinerary.
    • For all journeys, bags will be tagged to the final destination but customers will be required to collect their luggage to clear customs.
    • Passengers checking in for multi-sector journeys will be provided with a transfer wallet which explains the process. This will be given to the traveller at the initial check-in point.
Domestic to International Connection
(i.e. NPE to AKL on NZ and AKL to SYD on NZ7000 operated by DJ)
Check-in at Napier:
  • Transfer Wallet received
  • Boarding pass to AKL
  • Bags tagged to SYD
Arrive Auckland:
  • Check-in DJ International (with transfer wallet)
  • Boarding pass to SYD
  • Bags automatically transferred
International to Domestic Connection
(i.e. MEL to CHC on DJ and CHC to HKK on DJ8000 operated by NZ)
Check-in at Melbourne:
  • Transfer Wallet received
  • Boarding pass to CHC
  • Bags tagged to HKK
Arrive Auckland:
  • Collect bags, clear customs
  • Check-in NZ domestic (with transfer wallet)
  • Boarding pass to HKK
Baggage:
  • On products that permit checked baggage, NZ passengers may check in with one piece of baggage up to 23kg. DJ passengers may check in with baggage up to 23kg
  • NZ excess baggage charges apply to passengers booked on NZ series flight numbers – excess charges per piece apply
  • DJ excess baggage charges apply to passengers booked on DJ series flight numbers – excess charges per kg apply.
  • A single trans-tasman excess baggage charge will apply if journey includes a domestic connecting flight.
      Additional Baggage Allowances
    • Air New Zealand premium customers (Gold Elite, Gold, Koru) who are booked on DJ and DJ8000 series flights are not entitled to any additional checked baggage allowance over and above what is included as part of their DJ fare.
    • Pacific Blue premium customers (Velocity Gold, Silver) who are booked on NZ or NZ7000 series flights are not entitled to any additional checked baggage allowance over and above what is included as part of their NZ fare.
Lounges:
  • Passengers entitled to lounge access on either carrier will be granted access to both NZ and DJ lounges, however they will be required to present their boarding pass and relevant membership card (excludes Pacific Island services)
  • Only access to Air New Zealand or Virgin Australia owned and operated lounges is permitted. Click on the carrier to view their lounges: Air New Zealand, Pacific Blue.
Loyalty and Benefits:
A frequent flyer partnership between Airpoints and Velocity will cover both the Alliance routes and the wider airline network with the exclusion of Pacific Island flights. Tier status from either programme will be recognised by each airline.
  • Airpoints members will earn Airpoints Dollars for flying on an Virgin Australia Group of Airlines operated flight (excluding Pacific Island flights)
  • Airpoints members must purchase an NZ fare to earn Airpoints Status Points
  • Virgin Australia will offer Velocity Points accrual benefits and Status Credits in accordance with the rules of the Velocity programme on NZ flights.
  • Airpoints and Velocity members will be able to book reward flights with either airline

Network:
The full schedule comes into effect from November with Air New Zealand operating two thirds of the trans-Tasman flights and Pacific Blue operating one third.

  • On NZ7000 series flights, Seat and Seat + Bag customers must hire a digEplayer (subject to availability) in-flight to receive any in-flight entertainment
  • To ensure Air New Zealand Gold Elite, Gold and Koru members receive premium benefits on DJ operated services, they must always present their membership card.
  • Seat only fares can only be booked through your Tandem Travel team
  • Works Deluxe fares can only be booked through your Tandem Travel team and are not available on NZ7000 services flights (i.e. services operated by DJ)
  • Premium Economy is not available on DJ8000 services flights
  • Advanced seat select is only available to NZ The Works and Works Deluxe customers once ticketed. DJ does not permit pre seating
  • Airpoints members will earn Airpoints Dollars when flight on Virgin Australia Group of airlines (excluding Pacific Island flights) and Velocity members will earn Velocity Points and Status Credits on Air New Zealand flights
  • Airpoints members must purchase an NZ fare to earn Status Points
  • Passengers entitled to lounge access on either carrier will be granted access to both NZ and DJ lounges on presentation of their boarding pass and membership card.
