This time, we're in Wellington. From a city stay with a proper workspace and a 3pm chocolate fix, to an elevated executive option and an airport hotel that makes a 7am flight considerably easier, three members of our team put three very different Wellington hotels to the test.
For the Sweet Treat Lover – Mövenpick Hotel, Wellington
Chocolate is part of the experience here, with cookies and chocolate husk tea on arrival and a daily Chocolate Hour from 3pm. Add a pool, sauna and gym, and there are plenty of perks to enjoy between meetings.
AJ Johnston, Tandem Account Manager, found Mövenpick Hotel Wellington a comfortable and well-equipped option for a business stay. Her room was spacious, impressively quiet and had a proper desk for catching up on work between meetings, something she particularly appreciated while a classic Wellington storm was unfolding outside.

The extras are where Mövenpick adds some personality. Fresh cookies and chocolate husk tea were waiting on arrival, while the hotel's daily Chocolate Hour from 3pm includes a chocolate fountain, chocolates and slices. For anyone checking in after a day of meetings, it's a welcome afternoon pick-me-up.
There's also a modern bar and restaurant overlooking Wellington, plus a pool, sauna and gym, giving travellers plenty of options without having to leave the hotel. Anna-Jane's practical tip is to make use of the "VIP" lift, which provides access further down the hill and can save some walking when heading into the city.

For a Premium Stay - Sofitel, Wellington
Quiet rooms, thoughtful service and practical business touches make this a polished option for a corporate stay. With 24-hour room service, fast Wi-Fi and Club Lounge access available, it’s well set up for both working and unwinding.
For Ronny Zhang, Tandem Travel Team Leader, Sofitel Wellington stood out for its combination of polished surroundings, practical business-travel features and genuinely attentive service.
Her Superior Queen Room was generously sized, with a comfortable seating area and proper desk, complemented by fast, reliable Wi-Fi and USB ports beside the bed. Despite the hotel's proximity to the motorway, double glazing kept the room impressively quiet, while a plush bed and pillow menu helped deliver a good night's sleep.
24-hour room service is particularly useful for travellers returning late from meetings or functions. Those with Club Lounge access also have breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening drinks and canapés from 5pm to 7pm, with the lounge offering a quieter space to work, have an informal meeting or unwind.
One detail worth knowing when booking is that some rooms overlook the neighbouring Bolton Street Cemetery, which may be culturally sensitive for some travellers. The hotel can accommodate requests for alternative views, so this can be raised in advance.
For Ronny, the service was the standout. The team was warm, genuine and consistently attentive, giving the stay a personal feel without losing the polish you would expect from Sofitel.
Tandem Takeaway: A strong option for executives and corporate travellers wanting a more premium Wellington stay, particularly when quiet rooms, attentive service and 24-hour dining matter.
For Early Flights – Rydges, Wellington Airport
For business travellers with an early departure, late arrival or multi-city itinerary, the biggest advantage of Rydges Wellington Airport is simple: you’re already at the airport.
Vanessa Hefer, Marketing & Communications, stayed there while the Tandem leadership team travelled from Auckland to Wellington and on to Christchurch for our FY27 Strategy Roadshow.
The team could drop their luggage after arriving in Wellington, spend the day in the city, then return knowing their 7am flight the next morning didn't require an early taxi or extra time for traffic and weather.
"For me, the biggest luxury was waking up already at the airport. We had a 7am flight to Christchurch, so not having to think about taxis, traffic or the weather made the morning so much easier. When you're travelling between cities for work, taking one more thing off the to-do list really does make a difference."

Vanessa's Deluxe King room overlooked the runway, Lyall Bay and the Southern Headlands Reserve. Despite the prime plane-spotting position, the double-glazed, vacuum-sealed windows kept the room impressively quiet. The room itself was spacious and modern, with complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, climate control and everything needed for a short business stay. A coffee machine would have been a welcome addition, although Vanessa admits that might have been her pre-7am-flight self talking.
Dinner and drinks at Whiskey Lima Golf made for an easy end to a long day, while a 24-hour gym is available for travellers wanting to fit in a workout. The striking lobby and original New Zealand artwork also give the property more character than you might expect from an airport hotel.
Tandem Takeaway: Particularly well suited to early departures, late arrivals and multi-city itineraries, removing an airport transfer and one more variable from an already busy travel day.
